The atmospheric conditions were stormy the morning I visited the iconic Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. I arrived during blue hour and walked to an observation area, waiting patiently for daybreak. I could hear the waves crashing along the rocky coast and the call from seagulls as they approached shoreline.

The morning light soon emerged from darkness, and I was inspired to observe my surroundings. I noticed how the golden colors from the sunrise created a beautiful reflection on the windows of the lighthouse inn. At that moment, I thought about the innkeepers who had lived there over the years. I imagined how they kept a watchful eye on the ships navigating the rugged coastline. It must have been the bright light from the lighthouse headlamp and the glow from the candlelight in the lighthouse inn that encouraged the captains of these vessels to come ashore. They had finally reached the safe harbor of New England.
