Smoky Mountain High gives you a rare view of a Smoky Mountains sunset as smoke-like fog rolls over the mountaintop, enveloping the landscape to create an atmospheric scene at Clingmans Dome, the highest vista point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is known for cascading waterfalls, diverse wildlife, and illustrious fog that resembles smoke. It is one of my favorite destinations to photograph and one of America’s most beloved national parks. This evening in late April, I intended to take in the sunset at the Clingmans Dome observation area that offers spectacular views at 6,643 feet. The conditions can change drastically and suddenly at this height, anticipating what you might see and experience changing from moment to moment.

As the evening begins to fade away, the sun is not the leading actor in this scene. Instead, the fog rolling and tumbling over the mountain top becomes the featured show. The contrast between the dark mountainside and grey stormy clouds, resembling smoke, creates a dramatic setting with soft colors of a vanishing sunset in the background. I hope this image of "Smoky Mountain High" elevates your mind and spirit.
