The Color of Summer, captured from the Cowee Mountain Overlook received "The Peoples Choice Award" in the 19th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition awards ceremony, held at the Turchin Center for Visual Arts in Boone, NC.
The Cowee Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway is near Cherokee, North Carolina, and offers stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. After taking in the scenic views during my daylong drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, this overlook would be my final destination for sunset. The conditions at this overlook are constantly changing due to the high elevation and the sunsets can be absolutely breathtaking. When I arrived at the overlook, the sky appeared angry and the weather conditions were questionable. I asked myself if there would even be a sunset to capture, and yet a gentle voice encouraged me to be patient. As I watched the scene unfold, a large ominous looking storm cloud rolled in over the valley directly in front of me, creating the perfect drama for my composition. This cloud would soon become the star of the show!
In an instant the dark grey clouds transformed into a tapestry of colors from the intense sunlight piercing through and reflecting off of them to create this stunning landscape scene. It was one of the most spectacular sunsets I have ever witnessed. With tears of joy in my eyes, I realized this unforgettable moment was also a powerful sign from God. He is our light in times of darkness and gives us comfort when the storms of life hover above. It is a gentle reminder that the storms are just passing through and a beautiful sunset waits for us is in the end. I hope this scenic view inspires you to keep your eyes on His divine light and everlasting presence through the art of nature.
